Gluten-free–It’s Not All Good

We’ve been going on and on about how great gluten-free living is, not just for those with gluten intolerance, but for those of us who aren’t afflicted with any kind of gluten sensitivity as well. There’s been a steady increase in gluten-free products on the market in recent years, and these products serve a clear need – it is estimated that 1 in 133 Americans today is gluten intolerant, and about 6% have reported some form of gluten sensitivity. The gluten-free market in Canada reached more than half a billion (USD) dollars last year, and reports have surfaced that intolerance is on the rise in Asia – in particular, Singapore, where statistics on the subject are proving easier to track down.

While much of the literature available talks about the benefits of going gluten-free, we point out 5 pitfalls to avoid when embarking on your gluten-free lifestyle.

Nine Surprising Sources of Gluten To Watch Out For

Nine Surprising Sources Of Gluten To Watch Out For

Gluten can be found in most foods today, even foods that we don’t think might contain them! Besides foods whose ingredient list contain obvious sources of gluten such as wheat and barley, gluten may be found in our foods disguised as other ingredients, such as starch, malt, or soy sauce (note: tamari is made without wheat and so is gluten-free). Watch out also for the common gluten-containing ingredients that are listed using their latin names, such as Triticum vulgare (wheat), Hordeum vulgare (barley), Secale cereale (rye), Triticale (cross between wheat and rye), and Triticum spelta (spelt, a wheat variety).

10 Ways To Energise Yourself

10 Ways To Energise Yourself

1. Energize with healthy snacks

Yes, we said it, snack away! It’s alright to keep your calorie intake up throughout the day so that your energy levels stay high. But it’s important when you are snacking that you keep it healthy. Stay away from fatty and excessively sugary foods, as they deplete the oxygen from your body, replacing them with fat instead, thus defeating the purpose of snacking. No wonder you want to crash after that triple cheeseburger!

Some suggestions for healthy snacks include: apple with homemade or organic peanut butter, low-fat yogurt, low-salt pretzels, unsalted/roasted nuts, celery and cottage cheese.
